Ordnance Survey Map depiction

Within TrailWise, how a track is shown on OS maps is handled as a type of evidence about that track. When there is no better information available, TrailWise will use that depiction to offer advice on possible use of the track.

There is a summary of some relevant symbols at Geograph

On OS Landranger, a track may actually be shown with more than depiction at the same time - for example, National Trail diamonds over a footpath dotted line. Contributors should make a judgement about which is the most significant - in general, it would be the footpath, bridleway, byway or surfaced road element. If a track is not shown at all, that is in itself significant and TrailWise provides means to record this.

The depiction generally used in TrailWise should be the 'Landranger' (1:50,000) - occasionally this differs from that of the 'Explorer' (1:25,000) range. Of course, Explorer depiction can be added in its own evidence category. On rare occasions, where two Landranger sheets overlap, their depiction of the same route may differ ; again TrailWise allows recording of this.
