Why do I need a temporary password - and what do I do with it?

A temporary password serves two purposes:

It ensures that you change your password to something more memorable for you, the first time you log in.

It ensures that your email address is validated, as we will only use that address for correspondence. See the 'Email' FAQ for more about why we need a valid email address.

To use your temporary password, login by entering your username, and copy and paste the password you have been sent from the e-mail to the password box.

You will be directed to a screen where you can set a new password of your own choice (twice, as a double-check).

Depending on your web browser settings for remembering logon details, you may have to overtype the temporary password with the new password next time you log in. You browser should remember it properly on subsequent logins, if it normally remembers passwords for you.
