Simple icons can be found on the track details pages and listings, reminiscent of road signs.

The intent is to give an 'at a glance' indication of the usage rights that may or may not attach to a route. For example, a BOAT would show solid icons for all user classes, and a footpath show only walkers and wheelchair users, in the absence of any other factors. These icons are NOT definitive, few things in the Rights of Way world are - but they are derived from several factors in our records to give the best indication we can to potential route users.
Ultimately, users are always recommended to look deeper into the available information and make your own mind up. The icons can only be as useful as the information that users like you have given to TrailWise.
For example a BOAT may be physically impassable by wide vehicles, or traffic be regulated by Order (TRO). Legally, the underlying right of passage still exists so the icons are still present, but we can modify them to help the user - if the information is given to us.

Modifying factors like TRO restrictions known to TrailWise will be shown by red strike-outs overlaying the relevant icons. Again, this is a clue for the user to look deeper - for example an indicated TRO may be seasonal or apply only to some users.

Where a restriction is known to be seasonal, but not currently in force, the red strike-out is replaced by a grey one - meaning not in force today but do bear in mind it might be later, when planning ahead!

Sometimes there may be semi-formal request, endorsed by a user's organisation, to avoid or limit use of a route - a Voluntary Restraint request. Where we know about this, the relevant icons will be overlaid with 'V'. These have no legal force, but clearly all responsible users will take note.

Where some obstruction or problem affects users e.g. a fallen tree is reported, this is indicated by overlaying a yellow exclamation mark; the track details need examining to determine the exact problem.

Where use of a route requires some form of Permit, Licence or similar, the icon will be overlaid with a green 'P'. Consult track details to find out the nature of the permit scheme

On some routes, the exact nature or extent of public access rights is not clear-cut. TrailWise is no better than public authorities at determining the truth. In these cases, we offer a hint to users in that the icons are shaded grey to indicate the uncertainty. Potential users of these ways MUST investigate the available evidence, or consult user organisations, and make their own minds up.
If a user icon is simply not present, it means that TrailWise contains no information suggesting that there is any reasonable likelihood of rights existing for that user. You may know better - if so please contribute what you know!
