External map services

TrailWise contains geographical information, sometimes the only way to fully appreciate it is in conjunction with a map. TrailWise does not have independent built-in map imaging, but a number of organisations provide UK mapping on the web.

Both www.streetmap.co.uk and www.multimap.com provide UK maps which can be targetted by grid reference or searched by name. Maps are available from road atlas style, via OS Landranger 50,000:1, to street maps and satellite photos. In some places TrailWise may provide convenient links to these services. Users should be aware that sometimes online maps may be a few years old, just like their paper counterparts.

The Ordnance Survey provides its well known UK maps up-to-date at www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/oswebsite/getamap. Once again these can be located by grid ref or by name, maps are available down to Explorer 25,000:1.

Historians can find 19th century OS maps online at www.old-maps.co.uk

TrailWise has no connection with, and does not endorse, any of these services. Users should make themselves aware of any restrictions or conditions on their use, e.g. what you can do with images supplied or printed.
